Description

Many people walking along the busy Falmouth seafront have no idea that just metres away exists a world where new life starts and gentle giants swim and thrive. You don’t need to travel to distant tropical seas to find sharks — right here in the shallow waters of Cornwall, incredible marine life is just beneath the surface.

In this film, we explore Cornwall’s local sharks: from tiny, newly hatched babies in coastal rock pools to adult nursehound sharks resting in the kelp forest.

We begin our search at low tide below Falmouth town, exploring an important local nursery site. Searching through the seaweed and exposed pools, we find “mermaid’s purses” — the leathery egg cases of the nursehound shark — and discover a tiny, perfectly formed baby nursehound hiding in the shallows.

Heading into the open, green-blue waters of the bay we navigate kelp forests to find the common, diminutive small-spotted catsharks resting on the seabed and swimming between seaweed. Finally, we push further into the kelp forest to track down our ultimate local shark: the gentle but bulky adult nursehound, including some huge individuals 1.5m long curled up asleep in the shadows.
