view of the current proscription of large gatherings, I spent a reflective New Year’s Eve alone aboard my dinghy, anchored by a little rocky island on the Rade de Brest in Brittany – and stayed on the shingle beach during most of New Year’s Day 2021. The island is called la Petite Île du Bindy, (spelling varies). It is linked to the shore by a shingle beach, so although I had it totally to myself all through the night, various people visited the island during the day, as you will see in the video.
This film was intended to be rather longer, to include the windy passage to the island, putting the boat tent up in the rain as darkness fell, as well as shaking the frost off it in the morning! But I lost virtually all the first day’s footage and various other scenes in a computer crisis. I also didn’t talk very much to the camera during the second day because I had recurring hiccups, which I have tried to disguise in the edit! The footage that remains is slow, reflective and sunny. I hope it is exciting enough for you all….

AVEL DRO Do you want a boat like mine? Avel Dro is an Ilur designed by François Vivier, and built of clinker plywood by Les Charpentiers Reunis of Cancale in 1994. The design is based closely on the traditional inshore fishing boats of Brittany in the early years of the twentieth century, hence her single boom-less lugsail rig and lack of a mainsheet horse, (sometimes controversial among my viewers). Although rare in Britain, Ilurs are relatively common in France. The name Avel Dro is Breton, and means a shifting wind. Length 4.44 m Sail area 12.2 m² Beam 1.70 m Draught 0.25 / 0.86 m Design category C3 François Vivier’s website (in English): http://www.vivierboats.com/en/ Similar dinghies can often be found for sale in the French magazine le Chasse-Marée: https://www.chasse-maree.com/revue/ Or try Le Bon Coin, (where you can buy anything in France): https://www.leboncoin.fr
