The weedy Seadragon or sometimes called common Seadragon be found right along the entire south coast of Australia from Geralton in Western Australia to Port Stephens in NSW. Although they grow up to 45cm in length, they can be sometimes difficult so see due to their inbuilt camouflage that allows them to blend into their surroundings. They feed on Mysid Crustaceans, tiny animals that look like mini prawns. Closely related to seahorses the male of the species also carries the eggs. However he carries them on the tail, rather than carrying them in a brood pouch. The transfer of eggs from female to male has not yet been recorded and it is unknown exactly how this transfer occurs. The weedy Seadragon can commonly be found in and around protected Piers and reefs, from 1-50m deep. If you want to see one, ask a local dive shop for advice, if you want to see one with eggs, November to February is your best chance. They are a highly protected species and divers should be cautious as to not touch or damage these precious animals of the sea.
