It may be winter but we’re back underwater for another wildlife mini documentary! This time we’re tackling the stunning Eagle Ray, More specifically the Southern Eagle Ray found across NSW coastline in Australia. This film was shot at Shelly Beach, a marine sanctuary just off Manly Beach in Sydney. These members of the Eagle Ray family are endemic to Australia and are only found in Southern Australian waters.
Each winter around halfway through Giant Cuttlefish Mating swarms of these Eagle Rays reside in Cabbage Tree Bay for the cooler season. Distinct from it’s international relatives, the Southern Eagle Ray has a long pointed wingspan and it’s brownish olive colour. They are also typically much larger than the more well known and tropical Blue Spotted Eagle Rays.
While they are equipped with a poisonous barb, it’s not used for hunting, but rather it’s used as a last resort mechanism for self defence. These animals are bottom feeders, and they use their snout to kick up the sand on the sea floor before filtering through it in search of crustaceans or molluscs.
Like majority of the animals featured in this documentary series, these Rays are listed as a near threatened red listed species, humans and overfishing being their largest predator.
