Description

Autumn has fully arrived on the Cornish coast, but far from being quiet, the kelp forests of Falmouth are bustling with life, energy, and colour.

In this film, we immerse ourselves in this incredible marine ecosystem, encountering the weird, wonderful, and often beautiful marine wildlife of Cornwall in autumn.

Just off shore from the main town beaches, the kelp fronds are looking tatty and worn, but they are sparking with tiny jewels — colourful blue-rayed limpets gathering in numbers to ride out the forthcoming storms. Swimming between the kelp to the sandy patches, we encounter bright red gurnard fish with bizarre finger-like fins and huge eyes, and large numbers of intelligent cuttlefish hovering around the seaweed and camouflaged on the seabed.

After a quiet summer, we also come face-to-face again with the gentle giants of the kelp forest — the nursehound sharks have returned, searching for food and resting between in the rocky gullies, while their smaller cousins the catsharks are active once more.

And above the surface, we’re treated to some beautiful sunrises and soft golden light.
