Late spring is easily the most transformative time of the year for UK marine life. In this video, I head beneath the surface along the stunning Cornish coast to track down the incredible wildlife arriving with the spring wildlife surge.
I begin our coastal wildlife expedition in the shallow rock pools, discovering the fascinating life of the sea hare. As the weather shifts, I go diving into the moody green seagrass beds to witness the gathering of sometimes huge spider crabs and track down my first small-spotted catsharks of the year resting on the seabed.
Once the sun breaks through and the visibility becomes unreal, I head out into the seaweed gardens and kelp forests to swim alongside pulsing blue jellyfish, and dropping beneath the golden kelp canopy for a breathtaking close encounter with a 1.5 metre nursehound shark that swims directly to the camera lens! Finally, on our journey back to the shallow reef, we catch a male corkwing wrasse dedicatedly building its nest out of colourful seaweeds.
If you love British marine life, snorkelling, rock pooling, underwater photography and filming, and exploring the hidden world of the UK coast, be sure to subscribe! I have dedicated mini-films coming soon focusing on Cornish sharks, spider crabs, and many other local residents from sea slugs to jellyfish.
