Description

The Marine Turtle Research Group (MTRG) has been netting for turtles in the Indian River Lagoon, Florida for over 30 years as part of a long-term project examining trends in abundance and health of coastal juvenile turtles in Central Florida. The MTRG samples in the Lagoon twice a month, year round. During each sampling trip, a net that is just shy of 500 meters is set in 6-8′ of water and continually monitored by boat. Any turtle that is captured is immediately removed from the net using a dipnet, and transferred to a “work up” boat where the turtles are measured, weighed, and photographed. Tissue and blood samples are collected for research purposes (or by request from collaborative researchers) including genetic work and foraging ecology studies.
