Ewens Ponds is a series of three spring fed limestone sinkholes 25 kilometres south of Mount Gambier, South Australia. The ponds are popular with recreational divers due to underwater visibility of up to 50 metres.
There are 3 ponds in total.
Each pond is connected to the others by shallow watercourses called “races”.
The ponds vary from 50 meters in length to 19 meters and have a maximum depth of 13meters in pond 3.
The clarity of the water also allows sufficient sunlight to penetrate that allows plant growth on the pond beds to reach up to 6 metres (20 ft) in height.
Of particular interest in these clear waters is the actual observation of photosynthesis – aquatic plants can be seen releasing thin trails of bubbles as they convert carbon dioxide into oxygen.
Be very careful not to touch or fin near the bottom and excellent buoyancy control is required, as the silt layer is easily disturbed.
Divers enter at the First Pond, drift with the current through the First Race to the Second Pond, and then continue through the Second Race to the Third Pond before exiting the water via a ladder there.
There is currently no permit required to dive Ewens Ponds, however the nearly Picannini ponds requires a permit.
