Description

As summer ends, the Cornwall coast is a time of gradual change.

In this film, we experience the transitions that occur in the beautiful underwater environment, as the harshness of midsummer gives way to the softer, slower pace and golden hues of autumn. We encounter a variety of creatures that arrive and depart, including charismatic cuttlefish and impressive jellyfish.

As the nights begin to draw in and the sea temperature starts to slowly drop, the last of the summer wildlife begins to leave. The remaining compass jellyfish hang on for a few more weeks, and large baitballs of sprat fish and shoals of sand eels dart in the softening sunshine. Late summer is also still rich with ethereal seaweed gardens, while the kelp forest starts its process of dying back.

While the pace of underwater life slows as autumn arrives, we’re treated to stunning sunrises and beautiful yellow and golden seaweeds, matching the changes above the surface too. Late summer and early autumn also mark the arrival inshore of one of the most charismatic and intelligent of all ocean animals – the cuttlefish. We encounter these swimming and hunting around the kelp forest, and using their powers of colour change and camouflage to blend in with their surroundings.

Even at the quieter times, there is still wonderful wildlife to see and beautiful scenes to encounter.
